A new Chair for AWIA

As we approach the end of 2022, we'd like to share with you some exciting, albeit bittersweet, news.

From January 1 2023, I will be stepping down as Chair of the Australian Web Industry Association and handing the reins over to the incredible Jason Soultan.

As you know, I’ve been the Chair of AWIA for close to three years now and in that time we’ve accomplished so many amazing things (which I’m very proud of) including:

  • A revamp of the Australian Web Awards brand and website, including a simplified application journey, new categories and a complete overhaul of the judging process

  • Adding a range of incredible people from across the industry to the AWIA board as Directors

  • Securing new partnerships with aligned organisations, and

  • Hosting and sponsoring a number of industry events, from our very own Lunch and Learns to member-led initiatives.

I know you’ll join me in making Jason feel welcome in his new role as Chair.  Jason is the Co-Founder & Design Director of the multi-award-winning digital agency (and long-time AWIA members) Soul+Wolf in Melbourne.

In 2019, Jason founded the NO/BS Conference and has since run two large-scale digital conferences in Melbourne and associated workshops for the design and tech industry throughout Australia and overseas.

With nearly 20 years of experience in design and digital, Jason has witnessed the evolution of the web industry firsthand and knows the ins and outs of the industry intimately. His passion for purpose-driven design, developing relationships, and building inclusive communities is what drives him to make our industry a better place for all involved.
But first, a few thank-yous…

To you, AWIA members – from the work you do to the way you show up for us and each other, it has been inspiring and a joy to represent and serve you.

To AWIA Directors: Rich, Fredy, Jay, Dan, Chris, Heylee and Alex – thank you for trusting me to lead you the last few years and I’m beyond lucky to know you!

To AWIA membership coordinator extraordinaire Sharné – we would be lost without you, you’re actually magic in human form.

What happens next?

I’ll continue as your AWIA Chair until the end of December, then Jason will officially take over in January. I’ll remain on the board as a Director into 2023 and I look forward to helping Jason achieve his goals and realise his vision for AWIA moving forward.

If you have any questions at all, please don’t hesitate to reach out!

All my best,
Dr Marion Piper
Outgoing AWIA Chair
